Sustainable mangrove-friendly aquaculture development - Myanmar
18 October 2022
WWF is committed to collectively protecting Myanmar’s forests and rivers.
There is a need to counter the rapid deforestation of mangroves in Myanmar and so WWF, together with partners, has carried out various studies in the Ayeyarwady Delta region. This report presents a cost-benefit analysis for extensive aquaculture without mangroves and with mangroves within ponds, demonstrating higher monetary benefits for the latter. It presents the results of an investment analysis and provides recommendations on leveraging financial resources. The report also considers potential institutional, social and environmental risks, and strongly emphasises the need to involve local communities and private companies in the transformation of degraded mangrove land to more productive and sustainable uses.
